Carbiotix decides to scale up the production of CarbiAXOS from oat fiber

May 17, 2023, 08:45

Carbiotix (publ) ("Carbiotix" or "Company") announces today that the Company has decided to scale up the production of CarbiAXOS from oat fiber at its production site in Bjuv. The oat fiber is supplied by The Green Dairy Sweden AB (“The Green Dairy”) based in Karlshamn, Sweden, and dried utilizing a technology provided by Elajo Technology Solutions AB (“Elajo”) based in Oskarshamn, Sweden. This decision to scale up the production of CarbiAXOS based on oats follows a successful 9-month evaluation project originally communicated on the 30th of March 2022. Successfully sourcing and upcycling fiber from plant based dairy alternatives will play a key role in Carbiotix’s ability to ensure a reliable and diverse source of raw materials, in addition to improving the sustainability footprint of our entire product portfolio.

Kristofer Cook, CEO of Carbiotix, comments
“I am very happy to announce that we have made a decision to scale up the production of CarbiAXOS from oat fiber at our site in Bjuv. This decision follows the successful completion of a 9-month evaluation project we started in 2022, demonstrating that we could manufacture a potentially very effective prebiotic ingredient from oat fiber. It also brings me pleasure to announce that we will be sourcing this oat fiber from The Green Dairy, a leading contract manufacturing company for plant-based dairy alternatives. They are also pioneers with regard to sustainability and have invested in a drying technology provided by Elajo that dries the oat fiber side stream product, which without drying is very perishable and typically sold for animal feed.

My hope with scaling up the production CarbiAXOS from this dried oat fiber is that it will serve as a case for increasing the supply of dried oat fiber from The Green Dairy as well as exploring other side stream raw material flows where Elajo’s drying technology could be used. This includes not only other fiber from the plant-based dairy alternative industry which is expected to be worth 25 billion USD in the next 5 years but also other sources of side-stream raw materials from established industries such as grains leftover from beer and alcohol production. For Carbiotix, we are not only interested in exploring different raw materials to produce CarbiAXOS and building up a portfolio of different products that we can use to customize optimal prebiotic blends but also in ensuring a reliable and diverse supply of raw materials to allow us to grow and hedge against potential supply chain disturbances, most notably those which were recently caused by geopolitical and pandemic supply chain constraints.

Using upcycled raw material sources will also have a dramatic impact on our sustainability footprint as we are taking a side-stream product typically sold for animal feed and converting it into a high-end prebiotic ingredient. Moreover, this prebiotic ingredient could be re-introduced to the product where the side-stream materials originated from, further improving the circularity of the process and product. We will in parallel to scaling up the CarbiAXOS oat process explore this opportunity as well as other business opportunities with The Green Dairy as both a supplier and potential customer.”
